The Animal Store Alphabet Book: STEAM Girl Friday

animal store alphabet book by bearman and Hamlin
I totally ripped this off from their site.
We're adding a bit of Art to our STEM Girl Feature in order to shine the spotlight on my talented writer friend, Susan Bearman, and her equally talented sister-in-law, Rebecca Hamlin, who resigns supreme in the visual realm creating everything from scenery for stage plays to my talis, to the rich illustrations in the Animal Store Alphabet Book.

I remember Susan showing me the preliminary designs for the Animal Store Alphabet Book a year ago, so it's especially exciting to see the book in print after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Speaking of market, the book is based on the animals inside the Chicago-area pet store, The Animal Store which is owned by Bearman's husband.

As a project funder, I received my copy of the book today and it's a winner. From Amphibian to Zebra Finch, the book introduces a variety of animals, through colorful images and informative rhymes. Each illustration is surrounded by bonus facts. For example, the bump on the head of an Oranda (fish) is called a wen.

When my boys were younger, I loved bringing home books like this that could engage them on many levels--looking at pretty pictures, listening to the flow of the rhyming words and learning about our world. Escape from our busy time-crunched, screen-filled world by snuggling up with your little one and a good book like this.
